The following individual received a Fischer Grant in 2013:
Brett Woebler – Expedition Arguk - aims to help bring the changing Arctic to the world. A small team of scientists and media experts will hike and packraft approximately 270 miles, from the protected spires of Brooks Range, through NPR-A, past the Colville Bridge construction, to Prudhoe Bay, the industrialized epicenter of Alaska’s petroleum industry. They will carefully observe and record what they see and implement creative and innovative ways to share their experiences with a broad audience.
Gileard Minja – Kilimanjaro Cleanup – The expedition will conduct waste cleanup on the Machame route of Mt. Kilimanjaro, organized by university faculty in collaboration with 40 students. The expedition will set baseline information for the park administration on the alternative ways for environmental conservation in the mountain environment not only for Machame route but also for all Kilimanjaro routes. The resulting outcome of the expedition will enable behavior change for climbers including porters, guides and tourist on solid waste management for sustainable environmental conservation and biodiversity protection in the park.
