Hard-Core Volunteers Defy Snow at Lumpy Trails Day

October 2007

Wet, cold volunteers at work among the golden aspens and granite boulders of Lumpy Ridge.

A powerful fall snowstorm did not deter about 25 hearty volunteers who showed up ready to get wet and muddy at the AAC’s seventh annual Lumpy Trails Day, organized by the Central Rockies Section. Joining forces with a crew of about a dozen workers from Rocky Mountain National Park, the AAC volunteers set to work on several projects around the old Twin Owls parking lot at Lumpy Ridge.

Because of the dangerous conditions, plans to rebuild the climbers’ trail to Batman Rock were scrapped. Instead, the volunteers and NPS team formed four crews to close social trails near the boulders by Little Twin Owls; plant native vegetation at the old parking lot site; and install erosion-control logs along the Black Canyon Creek Trail. Volunteers received T-shirts, coffee, donuts, lunch, and a big dose of good karma for coming out despite the foul weather.
