July 29 — Library Seeks NEH Challenge Grant

The Henry S. Hall, Jr. American Alpine Club Library and Colorado Mountain Club Collection have applied for a $350,000 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Challenge Grant that would provide major support for one of the AAC’s most vital resources.

“NEH Challenge Grants help institutions secure long-term improvements and support for their humanities programs,” said AAC Library Director Gary Landeck. “Winning the grant means the library's entire collection would grow significantly, we would preserve rare and fragile materials, digitize and automate library services, improve programming and outreach, increase fund-raising capabilities, and establish a general library endowment of nearly $600,000 over the next five years.”

NEH Challenge Grants require matching actual and in-kind donations before federal funding is released. To obtain the $350,000 in federal funds, the library must raise $1.3 million by May 2013. About $130,000 has already been raised. All donations to the library, including Friends of the Library appeals and earmarked donations to the AAC or Colorado Mountain Club, will be counted toward the fund-raising challenge.
