Job Description:

The American Alpine Club (AAC) has a position open for a Manager of theSam Pryor Shawangunk Gateway Campground(Gunks Campground). The campground is owned by the State of New York and operated jointly by the AAC and Mohonk Preserve (MP). The Gunks Campground is located a short walk from the Mohonk Preserve Visitors Center and less than 6 miles from New Paltz, NY. The Manager is employed year round, although hours may vary seasonally. Housing is provided on-site in Gardiner, NY as a benefit of the position. The Manager is required to live on the premises year round. The Manager is expected to function in support of and at the direction of the AAC Facilities Director.

The Manager performs the following specific duties, in cooperation with the Assistant Manager and other staff, as well as other duties required for the oversight and management of the campground:

Rules and Operations: The manager will oversee and enforce the Rules and Operations Plan to ensure a positive experience for all campers.

Registration and Check-out of Guests: Monitor the on-line reservations system through the AAC website, register and confirm guest membership upon arrival, check guests out, collect and maintain records of guest fees, provide information to guests concerning the facilities and features of both the Gunks Campground and Mohonk Preserve, including regulations concerning climbing access, resource preservation and other pertinent matters as required by the MP and AAC.

An ability to interact with guests and the public at all times in a friendly, courteous manner is indispensable.

Record Keeping: A variety of reports concerning the operation of the campground must be prepared and transmitted on a daily, monthly, or other periodic basis to the AAC office in Golden, Colorado. Accurate, complete, and daily record keeping is a critical function of the Manager. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Word is required.

Maintenance and Housekeeping: Maintenance and repairs are regularly required of the plumbing and electrical systems as well as other Campground structures. Relevant mechanical skills are desirable. The Campground also requires daily housekeeping in the form of cleaning and upkeep of the Managers house, Office, campsites, bathrooms, cook shelter, and other common areas, including the grounds.

Advertising and Social Media: Generating and maintaining advertising materials, as well as promoting the Gunks campground and AAC in general on social media outlets.

Merchandise: Design and purchase Campground specific inventory, and maintain an inventory of Campground specific merchandise.

Campground Staff: Post job openings, interview and (with approval) hire Seasonal Campground staff, volunteers and interns.

Public relations: The Manager will regularly work with the Campground Executive Committee, the Neighborhood Advisory Group and will monitor and respond to pertinent local and regional issues.

Event planning: Events will need to planned and executed at the Gunks Campground; it is the Manager’s responsibility to orchestrate these events.


This is a full time position based in Gardiner, New York. The salary for this position will be in the $30,000 - $36,000 range depending on qualifications.
