Seven Young Climbers Win AAC Mountain Fellowships

Seven young climbers received a total of $4,400 in grant funding in the spring round of Mountain Fellowship awards from the AAC. The Mountain Fellowship Fund encourages American climbers, age 25 years and under, to seek out climbs that might otherwise be out of reach. This round of recipients averaged 22 years old.
• Mason Earle (20) received $600 from the John R. Hudson Fund for an attempted first free ascent on Cerro Catedral, Chile.
• Joseph Forrester (24) and Jeremy Roop (24) got $600 each from the REI Challenge Fund for an exploratory trip to attempt first ascents on Chambe Peak, Malawi.
• Brianna Hartzell (19) won $850 from the Boyd Everett Fund for an attempted first ascent on Desire Mountain, British Columbia.
• Blake Herrington (23) received $850 from the Boyd Everett Fund for an attempted first ascent on North Taku Tower, Alaska.
• Nathan Smith (22) will use $400 for an exploratory trip to attempt new routes on Jebel Shams, Oman.
• Sevve Stember (24) received $500 from Rick L. Mosher Fund to try a first ascent on Wild Cat Point, Tuolumne, California.
