Ben Mapes: Mapes, a member of Engineers Without Borders, received a ZMBB Grant in 2008 for his work to improve the water supply for Malingua Pamba, a mountain village in Ecuador. With fellow engineers, he helped villagers build two large concrete tanks as part of a comprehensive gravity-fed water system. The engineers also taught the locals how to employ reusable concrete forms and local materials to expand the system. After completing his work on the water project, Mapes climbed 19,347-foot Cotopaxi.
