The American Alpine Club Nikwax Alpine Bellwether Grant

High alpine environments are early indicators of climate change. In order to document the impacts of global warming in these fragile ecosystems, Nikwax is underwriting the Nikwax Alpine Bellwether Grant (NABG), in association with the American Alpine Club (AAC). The NABG will be awarded annually, with $3000.00 divided between two or three recipients. Grantees will visit alpine regions to observe and photograph changes in glacier recession, upward plant migration, animal sightings and other critical indicators. The photographs and findings will be provided to climate experts, who can then detail methods for mitigating current and future impacts of global warming in fragile environments.
The application deadline is March 1. Grant applications must be made electronically in MS Word or PDF format by the due date. A valid scanned signature into the document in the appropriate section is required. If an electronic signature is not possible the application form must be mailed in with signature.
Selection Process
Applications are considered for their originality, their documentation plans (photo and video documentation is a plus) and the significance of the ecosystem being observed. The selection committee will review the plans for the use of funds rigorously. Projects with the potential for follow-up work and that are sensitive to the needs and customs of local populations are a plus.
Responsibilities
Within one month of returning, all grant recipients must submit to the AAC a written report for possible inclusion in AAC publications. Written acknowledgment of the American Alpine Club and Nixwax is required in any resulting publication. If for any reason the objective is canceled or significantly changed awarded funds must be returned to the AAC. Grant recipients may be asked to give a slide show or other presentation regarding the expedition. Please include your personal and professional vita (indicate academic degrees, and other pertinent biographical material) with your proposal.
