EVEREST – FANTASY RIDGE
A Special Presentation
by
KURT DIEMBERGER
February 28th, 2012, 6:30 PM
Wilbur Cross High School
181 Mitchell Drive New Haven, CT 06511

Presented by the City of New Haven’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Trees Outdoor Adventure Program
MARTIN TORRESQUINTERO, PROGRAM COORDINATOR

MOUNT EVEREST, also known in Nepali as SAGARMATHA (Goddess of the sky) and in Tibetan as CHOMOLUNGMA (mother Goddess of the universe), stands at 8848 meters or 29,029 feet. For many years, it was the ultimate challenge.
However, every climbing season (before or after the monsoons), climbers continue to break records, to the point that they are
now expected to be shattered.

However, the Great Ridge or EVEREST – FANTASY RIDGE remains the ultimate Everest challenge. From the first ascent of Shartse, onwards over the top of Everest to the far end in Tibet, it still eludes climbers, never having been conquered. Come hear how Kurt Diemberger has envisioned it, after his two decades of expeditions to Everest.

KURT DIEMBERGER is the only person alive to have the distinction of making first ascents of two of the world’s 8,000 meter peaks, Broad Peak in 1957 and Dhaulagiri in 1960. He climbed each without supplemental oxygen, and
Broad Peak, which he climbed with the late Hermann Buhl and two others, was the first eight-thousander to be climbed in West-Alpine-Style, long before this technique became widely used on the Himalayan giants. Kurt has, in all,
climbed six of the eight-thousanders. However, he is probably best known for his 30-year association with K2, and for surviving the 1986 tragedy which claimed the lives of 13 climbers. This became the subject of one of climbing’s most widely read books, The Endless Knot, and the award-winning movie Mountain of Dreams and Destiny. In addition, he has climbed in virtually all of the world’s mountain ranges, including many first ascents, from Africa to the Himalayas, and from South America to Greenland. He has received many awards for films, photographs, and literature. He is one of the most renowned climbers, an influential writer, and an indomitable survivor.

Ticket Info:
$10 in advance – cash, check or visa/mastercard if it’s greater than $20.
203-946-8027
or at the park’s office
720 Edgewood Avenue New Haven, CT 06515
$12 at the door – cash or check only

Are you prepared to deal with a medical emergency in a remote climbing area? Could you provide appropriate care for an injured rope mate in the event of a climbing accident? When did you last refresh your first aid skills?

The American Alpine Club – Southern Appalachian Section is offering its members a unique opportunity to acquire Red Cross Wilderness & Remote First Aid certification through a class designed for climbers, taught by a climber.

WFA is a basic class in back country emergency response. The 16 hour course will be tailored by the instructor, AAC member Danny McCracken, to the specifics of the remote climbing environment – far from EMS services. The class will cover assessment and urgent first aid techniques. It is appropriate for anyone regardless of experience level.

Successful completion of the course results in two year certification. A CPR prerequisite is required to get the certification. You may take the class without having taken CPR but cannot receive the American Red Cross certification.

The fee for the class and all class materials will be $55 for AAC members and $140 for non-members. Funds remaining after expenses have been covered will be donated to the American Alpine Club.

The class will be taught at Umstead State Park, Raleigh, NC. Class time is 9am to 5pm each day. The park has camping sites available. Out of town attendees should go to the NC State Parks web site to reserve a site. Hotel information is also available from Danny McCracken at the email address below.

Contact Danny McCracken to register for the class or for more information:
Phone – 919 274 2054
Email – Danny.McCracken@gmail.com

It’s that time again, the warm days and cool nights of October are going to be drawing climbers worldwide to the incomparable splitter cracks of Indian Creek. No longer a secret, the planet’s premier crack climbing venue needs a little TLC from the people who love it best—you!

The Western Slope Section of the AAC is once again pleased to sponsor, in cooperation with the BLM, a volunteer workday in Indian Creek arriving Friday night Oct 14, work on the 15th, and climb the 16th. Sounds fun, but wait….. in addition to earning great karma from helping spruce up a world class climbing area you also get:

• A free barbeque on Saturday night

• Outrageous campfire tales, some actually true

• Free crack climbing clinics on Sunday

• Beta from local experts

• A chance to meet and climb with new climbing friends

• Group camping

And….most of all, the good feeling from knowing the positive effect you helped make on the land managers that administer this remarkable resource.
Good stewardship is a positive way to help ensure continued access.

RSVP to me at donini@ouraynet.com by Oct 7 so I can plan the menu (please tell me if you have dietary preferences for the BBQ) and camping requirements.
