Wilderness First Aid Class

Back to events |

When: May 1, 2010

Where: Roswell, GA

Deep South Section Chair Chad Hagan is organizing a local Wilderness First Aid class with Ascent Adventure Consultants.

Wilderness First Aid is a good basic course in backcountry emergency response for almost any location. This 16 hour course is for those who work, live or play in remote areas – away from the usual EMS service. Even though the emergency workers near these areas may be trained to search for and rescue those in need, there may be a delay in the notification of assistance, the time required to get to the patient, or in moving the patient to more advanced treatment. It expands the concepts in First Aid: When Help is Delayed to give more detailed information and hands-on skills practice.

The course will cover the following:

  • The difference in WFA and street FA.
  • Causes & prevention of wilderness injuries
  • Seven Steps of of a wilderness first aid response
  • First Aid treatment for specific wilderness conditions
  • Patient transfer and evacuation

The course content will cover general WFA. There will be an emphasis on climbing and mountaineering situations. Students successfully completing the course will get American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid certification.

Location: Roswell Area Rec Center

Date: May 1-2, 2010. Class will be approx. 8 hours per day.

Cost: $95/person for AAC members, $125/person for non-members. Books will be provided for all participants.
